Christmas is for Love and Joy

Just a reminder what Christmas is all about.  Take some time out from your busy day, grab the partner and your kids and watch a couple of videos that will warm your heart and make you smile.  Then look at your loved ones, give them a hug, and remember that none of the material stuff will matter to anyone down the road.  The only thing we remember is whether or not we were loved and the time we spend with one another says that louder than anything else.

Merry Christmas!!

Lessons From The Little Red Haired Girl Next Door. The UnMowed Lawn.

TLRHG Unmowed lawn

The grass was over grown, perhaps the lawnmower had broken down, or perhaps her parents were just too busy with preparations for Christmas, but the little red haired girl appeared not to notice a thing amiss as she strode purposefully into the midst of the grass that was almost as tall as she was. She had that very busy look about her, like nothing would deter her from her very important appointment with her back yard.

Today’s look was a sort of fairy-cowboy-Barbie. She had her wings hanging off one arm and dragging in the grass and her fairy skirt. She had on cowboy boots and a straw cowboy hat with a dangling red whistle under her chin. And she had a pink Barbie t-shirt on- inside out for her own stamp of individualism and a political statement about how Barbie lives in all of us and it is our inner barbie we needed to cultivate and express!! I guess you could call it a”fairboybie” look. I loved it and immediately felt bad that I had not thought to bring a cowboy hat with me from Canada. I tugged at my own fairy wings as I watched her through the window … Continue reading

If I Were The Innkeeper

I saw this poster a couple of weeks ago. It is one of many that we see, often around the holidays. Many people read it and feel a sense of outrage at the inn keeper. Most of those same people identify themselves as someone who would have found room at their inn for a man and his heavily pregnant wife, had they been in his shoes those many years ago.

It is the same with the death of Christ and the persecution he and his followers suffered. People insist they would have followed him, they would have stood up and been counted. It is easy to talk about what we would have done, after the fact and all the outcomes are known. It is never quite as easy to make that same decision when the actual opportunity occupies the same moment as we do. Continue reading

Christmas Crap

Myrrhadee ChristmasGather around Chick and Stud-lets, have I got a Christmas load for you! And just in time for the big day. Is it just me or have we all spent far too may days to count, wandering the grounds of those gated homes, avoiding the guard dogs and the worrisome big guy with the gun, our little noses pressed up against the window, staring in at a lifestyle that we can only dream of? Isn’t it always worse at Christmas time?

I bet you have often thought, in despair, I can never ever have a Christmas like that, why the hell couldn’t mommy and daddy have just waited until after the rich people had sex so that I had a chance to be born to a much better life. And how many of us never bought mommy or daddy another Christmas gift, and then had to go to lots of therapy with meds that just distracted you with a bunch of imaginary friends, one of them a clown who kept trying to get you to do bad things.

Put the pill bottle down. I can make your dream Christmas come true. Look what I have found and am willing to share with you. Continue reading

It’s February, Do You Know Where Your Elf Is?

Talk about a slippery slope.

Lies tend to snowball all over themselves. I mean ok, who could have looked ahead and known that one day we would have malls and a whole lot of explaining to do. Who could have known we would be so mobile and have the ability to attend several malls in one Christmas season and that even kids with hired math tutors could add up that one “Santa” standing in front of the mall entrance, plus another Santa IN the mall , and yet another Santa in the big department store, equals too many Santa’s and a big BS on the parental story meter. The Scary Scary Christmas Story of When My Brother was a Cheap Skate.

degifted

Degifting:  The act of replacing useless and pointless merchandise with something more meaningful, such as a charitable donation, service project or holiday party.

My brother has always been into “degifting.” It is actually a swell idea … especially if you do not have any money for Christmas … make it all seem like a big political choice or some benevolent act on your part.  Like who actually checks up on whether the village in Africa actually got a new well so everyone could have clean drinking water or counts how many of those turtles swimming the ocean are tagged with your name??
